Are you getting your 5 a day?

Date November 10, 2008

My N95 was running T-Mobile’s version of 11.x.x and was turning itself off about 5 times a day. So I decided to tweak things and upgrade to 30.0.015. I’ve been running it for 3 days now, and it’s not turned off once. Looking good!

Computer says “No”…

Date October 7, 2008

Today I had an email from T-Mobile inviting me to renew my contract and look at upgrading my phone. This is easily done by following the link on the email to their website. I duely did this, logged in and went to the ‘renew & upgrade’ section.

However, when I got there, I was told I couldn’t renew or upgrade, as my contract was near it’s expiry date. In order to find my contract expiry date, I needed to text UP to 150… which I did.

Nokia Acquires Plazes

Date July 16, 2008

Now, I’ve not blogged for ages, but this is something worth blogging about!

Nokia has acquired Plazes. When Plazes had a S60 client, so you could update your location directly from your phone (over a GPRS connection) I used to use it every day… However, about a year ago they went all generic and you had to start sending SMS messages formatted in the right way to update your location - crap and costs me money.

So hopefully Nokia will add some sort of client application back again, or integrate the whole thing into their new Nokia Chat application will have to be seen. BUT THEY BETTER!

So, someone finally came up with an app to make the N95 a wifi hotspot!

‘Wi-Fi’ & ‘Mobile Data’ Convergence

Date January 29, 2008

Continuing on from my post about the Wi-Fi/Mobile Data Divide why not modify the mobile phone to be a wireless access point. That way your wireless devices could connect to you phone via wi-fi and then use the phone to connect to the internet via 3G?
Easy, problem solved…

The Ovi is Opening, Open, Closed… Open??

Date January 22, 2008

I blogged a while ago about Nokia’s new internet portal Ovi (meaning doorway). I signed up to be informed of its launch. Well today, I got an email welcoming me to Ovi. The email links to the current, Maps, Games and Music (along with it’s store) micro sites. Well they’ve been around for ages… what’s new? So I hopped over to the Ovi and that’s not changed either!? In fact they invited me to sign up to be informed of updates…

What’s going on? If this is the launch then it’s a PR disaster!

The ‘Wi-Fi’ ‘Mobile Data’ Divide

Date January 18, 2008

Mobile phones have the great advantage of being attached to the mobile network, and therefore being able to connect to the Internet using a mobile data service i.e. 3G or even 3.5G like the N95. As I’m sure your aware though, the N95 also supports Wi-Fi allowing us to surf, collect email, or even download content over UPnP. I’m sure that there are many other mobile phones out there that also support this dual functionality.

Looking at other non ‘mobile phone’ devices out there, they can only support Wi-Fi. I’m thinking of such amazing gadgets as the IPod Touch with it’s great browser, link to iTunes, email and so forth. Also the unbelieveable possibilities of linking the PSP to the PS3; so that you can watch TV programmes you’ve recorded at home on your PS3 anywhere in the world on your PSP.

My problem with this is pricing and availabilitly of Wi-Fi. I pay T-Mobile £7.50 a month for as much mobile data as I want. This is perfectly reasonable and I’m happy to pay it. I can therefore access my email anywhere, use web enabled apps like Google Maps, Yahoo! Go, Locatik, Mobizines… (the list goes on) all from my phone.

However, if we look at the iPod Touch which has a similar plethora of applications, we can only truly make them work by connecting to the internet via Wi-Fi. As Wi-Fi is fairly short range we have to be in a ‘HotSpot’. And as the British Government has made it illegal to use open Wi-Fi points you have to be pretty sure that the the Wi-Fi point is for public use either by looking for signs or asking the barman at your local boozer.

Finding one of these free, open, and available for public use Wi-Fi points is like finding a needle in a haystack… in the dark. So what’s the other options. Well there are many more Pay-As-You-Go Wi-Fi spots, that you can find at pubs, restaurants, service stations and so forth. But for some reason the pricing on these is extortionate! Take for example The Cloud, they offer two ways of paying, by SMS or credit card. If you pay by credit card you get about double the value you do over the SMS option. That is £4 for 30 mins via SMS compared to £4.50 for 30 mins using your credit card. Yes… thats right £4 for 30 mins/1 hour. This is half what I pay for a month of unlimited data. In fact Cloud 3 is there closest tarrif to mine, £6.99 for 3 hours. Of course that’s paying by credit card again, I’d only get 1 hour if I paid by SMS for that price!

No to me this make such devices like the iPod Touch and PSP useless in a Wi-Fi environment outside of the home (assuming you’ve got Wi-Fi at home!). My experience of useing mobile data out and about is that I use it for a short period of time and often. I want to check my email (2 mins), update my location (2 seconds), check the weather report (30 seconds), upload a photo (1 minute). The only people I can really see The Cloud targetting is the business community who frankly don’t care how long their online for because the company pays.

This has got to change! Wi-Fi has got to come down in price in order to make these mobile Wi-Fi only devices more appealing and accessable to the masses.

I spent hours on this game when I was 15, 16, 17… on my Amiga, an absolute classic patform arcade game. I didn’t know that a group was working on a Linux clone out there. But someone has taken the code and ported it to the S60 platform. So it’s yours to enjoy once again on your favourite Nokia.

‘My Nokia’ Tip-Of-The-Day

Date January 14, 2008

‘My Nokia’ took the time today to SMS me this great tip…

“Tip: Did you know that your N95 has a full web browser that allows you to surf internet pages from your mobile phone? Goto Menu>Web”

Don’t even start me on how many things are wrong with this… sigh.
